It's true - yes, though not acurate.
Hitler was so insensed by the scale of the escape that he ordered all of the prisoners to be shot immediately. However his advisors knew this would be seen as an obvious act of reprisal - and pursuaded him that not all should shot. Never-the-less Hitler ordered that more than half must be executed as a lesson to those thinking of escaping in the future.
So it was that 50 names were chosen for execution.
Most were being held in small police cells around the country. As they were being driven back toward Sagan, the car would pull over and the prisoner told to stretch his legs and relieve himself. At this point he would recieve a bullet to the back of the head.
Foolishly on the part of the police and Gestapo, they employed this identical technique for almost all of the prisoners - and filed carbon copy 'cover stories' for how the prisoners had attempted to escape.

The carbon copy accounts helped the british investigators, mainly run by the RAF. When they had investigated they arrested the gestapo agents involved, and they all recived punishment for teh action, some it seems showed remorse about their actions. Of the arrested gestapo about 13 were hung, and the rest served prison terms some up to life. The investigation after the war, was by most miltary persons in high command, seen as the most important investigation in pow treatment.
