For those of you wanting to use your miniatures purely for the boardgame - it's a nice touch just to give your miniatures a smart pewter finish rather than painting them colour - which will only chip in the long run.
To get the pewter finish that you'll see on some of the images I've posted here is very simple but brilliantly effective.
First, mix up some black paint with lots of thinners - at least 10 parts thinners to 1 part paint - I used Humbrol Matt black and turps - it needs to be a thinners based paint rather than water based - otherwise it wont work.
Either dip your figures in the thinned down paint or spread it on copiously. The black will flow into all the cracks and details.
Allow to dry thoroughly - stand the figure on his base on some tissue paper to dry.
Once dry - polish the figure using wire-wool or a 'Brillo pad' if you live in the UK - under running water. Be careful with the sentries not to bend the rifles.
The difference between a figure treated this way and one out of the box is significant - and you can chuck them in a box when you're done and not worry about the paint job.

Thanks for tip Ebob. I've been wondering how to do this for ages. They really look great. Do you varnish them when you are finished?

I don't varnish - I don't think you need to.
